#082 - POLITICS
Whenever I read through the list of themes I kept asking myself what I'm going to do for "politics" because that's one of the (many) themes that usually do not just present themselves to you. But then - alas! - the perfect opportunity! I was in Berlin for a big test and decided to stay a few days longer to relax a little but also to do some library work for my thesis. And then everybody got excited about Barack Obama's visit to Berlin and the speech he was going to give at the Siegessäule (Victory Column). So I thought that, while I'm in town and he's in town, it would be a shame not to go there and listen to him and - of course - take some pictures. I lucked out and got to stand right in front of the podium where I was able to actually hear his voice without the speakers. Obama gave a nice speech that was vague as expected but held some promising prospects. Those will still have to be seen fulfilled if he gets elected president, but his intentions are respectable. Berlin for Obama! Pictures taken on Juy 24, 2008.

#300 - DAWN
On July 23rd I woke up at the crack of dawn (don't know why, it was a strange night...) so in order to not let that opportunity pass I grabbed my camera, eyes still mostly closed, and just took a picture through the East window of the bedroom in my dad's apartment in Berlin. It's nothing fancy (that's not to be expected at 4.45am...), but you can clearly see the day approaching from the East. It's that time between dark and light that you don't get to see very often, at least not in the wee hours of the morning.

#171 - CHEESE
One of the themes that I didn't expect to cover on that day was "cheese". But then I spotted this book (never heard of it before, it's supposed to be some economy, self-motivation thing) - right next to the Bunny Suicides (rotfl!) - and thought that this would be a great take on the theme because it's definitely not what you expect. *lol* Picture taken on July 19, 2008.

#335 - UNUSUAL
I brought my car to the dealership today for the 15.000km annual inspection and some routine repairs that are due for a car that's slowly but gently approaching 180.000km. *passout* (And an extra *passout* for the money it will cost...) When I "checked in" my car, the mechanic in charge of it put it on a hydraulic ramp, which made for an unusual perspective on my car. You don't get to see the underside of your car very often. *lol* Pictures taken on July 14, 2008.
#326 - BARCODE
I bought a children's book (The tales of Wilhelm Busch) for my godchild today. Like everything, it has a barcode, but I thought this one was nicely framed by those two drawings and the red color of the book. Picture taken on July 14, 2008.
And just because I think it's funny and in my opinion belongs to the theme as well, here's a picture I took on Saturday of a finished Phaeton that also has a little barcode on. It's not obvious enough so I decided to look for a better picture for the theme. But it'd be a shame not to include it here. And you normally doen't see a car with a barcode, right?

#181 - MIDNIGHT
The city of Dresden by night, photographed from atop the tower of the city hall. These pictures weren't taken at exactly midnight, but very shortly after (still within the academic quarter ;)). I am quite proud of them and it would be a waste not to use them for this project. Pictures taken on July 13, 2008.
#070 - SPIDER WEBS
A spider web at the top of the tower of Dresden City Hall. It is a little blurry because I had to use the flash to make it visible and because my camera also decided to focus on the city scape in the background. But it is a very unique picture and I really like it. You don't get to see a spider web above the city very often. *lol* Picture taken on July 13, 2008.

#022 - TECHNOLOGY
The view inside the actual manufacturing part of the Transparent Manufactory of Volkswagen in Dresden from the lobby or one of the levels above the lobby. We weren't allowed to take pictures inside, so this is the closest I got to capturing the technology involved in the manufacturing process. The Phaetons are, with the help of only three or four robots on the way and of course the transportation elements, assembled - as the name suggests - manually. The workers have to wear white coats and gloves so that nothing can harm the carosseries and everything else of the precious and very expensive Phaetons. Since the opening of the manufactory in 2002, a total of 40.000 Phaetons has been produced there; 32 per day, which is a very small number in comparison to let's say the production of the VW Golf in Wolfsburg, which is a lot more automated. Well, this is a luxus car. Not everyone needs it and can afford it, so no mass production is necessary. *lol* Pictures taken on July 12, 2008.

#207 - FISH
Goldfish swimming in the little lake surrounding the Transparent Manufactury. The second photo is to explain why the water looks like it does in the first photo. The reflection shows the tower where the finished Phaetons wait to be picked up by their new owners. *lol* Pictures taken on July 12, 2008.
